Mission
of the
conference
Orphan
crops, also referred as
neglected or
lost crops, are crops
of
high economic
value in developing
countries particularly in Africa. These
crops include
cereal crops (such as
millet and tef),
legumes (cow pea,
grass pea and
bambara groundnut),
and root crops
(cassava and sweet
potato). Although orphan crops are
vital for the livelihood of millions of
resource-poor Africans, research in
these crops is lagging behind that of
major crops. To boost crop productivity
and attain food self-sufficiency in Africa,
research on orphan crops should get more
attention.

In this important conference we will
bring together scientists both from
developed and developing countries
and discuss techniques that could
be implemented in a scheme of
orphan crops improvement.
In addition, future
prospects and
feasibility of modern
biotechnology in African
agriculture will be
addressed. Success stories
will also be presented by
prominent scientists.
